Two of the largest hydraulic gold mines in the Sierra Nevada Mountains can be seen just a quarter-mile from a rest stop on Highway 20. Named by miners in the mid 1800s, Alpha and Omega Diggings only had a 30 year run before legislation shut down hydraulic mining due to it's environmental impact. The short interpretive trail takes you to a viewing platform where you can catch a beautiful view of the surrounding Sierra. Alpha and Omega are noticeable by the huge gold color ascarsa man has left on the mountain side. Although it is a very short hike, it's a good spot to get out of the car and stretch your legs!
