There and Back
Heading southeast out of the parking area, the semi-rocky Tarbell Trail heads up a moderate incline for 2 miles, winding through a forested area. Then the trail turns east and follows the ridge line for about 1.5 miles through clearings, high brush, and more forested areas. The trail then turns south through the forest, and hikers will have to navigate several switchbacks before reaching the North Fork Coyote Creek and nice foot bridge. From here, it is another 1.5 miles of moderately flat terrain on soft pine needles with some protruding rocks before you reach Hidden Falls at the South Fork Coyote Creek. Here there is another foot bridge that continues across the river and on the Tarbell Trail. While the Tarbell Trail creates a large loop, for those looking for a shorter mileage hike, simply turn around at Hidden Falls and return to the trailhead the way you came.
With parts of this trail in existence for more than 100 years, the !Tarbell Trailhead was formerly used exclusively by equestrians and hikers. Now, mountain bikers and other non-motorized recreational users also utilize the 35-mile system. The trailhead has a picnic tables and a vault toilet.
