Description
Seaman Gulch has a small cluster of trails that are conveniently close to west Boise and Eagle. They belong to the Ridge to River Trail System, but don't connect to the rest of the network. The biggest loop you can do without repeating any trails is about two miles in length. It uses Wild Phlox, Seaman Gulch, and Valley View trails. The trail surface is smooth, packed dirt, with very few rocky sections. Hills are short and not too steep, making them perfect for a casual hike or run. On these trails you'll get broad views over Treasure Valley. In addition to the western part of the metro area, you can gaze along the foothills at the downtown skyline and Table Rock. On a clear day you can see clear across the Snake River Plain to the Owyhee Mountains on the horizon. The immediate surroundings are typical foothills grassland, with golden grasses and scattered sagebrush. The low vegetation affords excellent views, but no shade. Therefore it can be quite hot in summer, but comfortable during the colder months. The trailhead on Seamans Gulch Road has room for several cars. There's a helpful trail map and a pit toilet. Dogs are welcome on the trails, and can even be off leash as long as they are under control and cleaned up after. Mountain bikers can also use the trails, so it's a popular place for beginners to build skills. Altogether this is a very welcoming little trail system and perfect for a quick workout or family outing.
