There and Back
Shaka Cave is located in the Superstition Wilderness are of Tonto National Forest. The trailhead is located on East Peralta Rd and is a very large dirt lot. Be prepared, there is no shade most of the day. The best time of day would be early morning or early evening. The Superstition Mountains provide some shade very late in the day. The trail is relatively flat as the trail follows the border of Tonto National Forest. Once crossing into the Tonto NF, the trail begins to climb. There is no shortage of Saguaros and off in the distance is Buzzards Roost and Elephant Butte for a nice backdrop on the hike out. From the East Peralta rd trailhead, follow the Lost Goldmine Trail at the west end of the parking area. Continue of this trail for 1.25 miles. At this point, the trail meets a barbed wire boundry for Tonto National Forest. The fence is broken down in this area to allow access to the Shaka Cave trail. Turn right over the fence and follow the trail for about 1.1 miles. It is very steep at the end and the cave is tucked away so it isn't seen until the very end.Return the way you came, back to the trailhead. The hike out offers great views, especially at sunset.
