The Ashokan Quarry Trail begins from a marked trailhead along Route 28A just west of Olivebridge, NY, and forms a scenic walking route through the Acorn Hill Unit. From the start, the wide and well-graded path winds gradually uphill through second-growth forest, quickly reaching remnants of 19th-century bluestone quarrying operations. At several short spurs and junctions, interpretive signs offer insight into the site’s industrial past and its role in building New York City. Follow the main path as it turns left at the first signed Y-intersection to stay on the primary loop.
Soon after, the trail traverses rocky outcrops with partial views toward the Ashokan Reservoir. On clear days, hikers can spot the Catskill High Peaks rising beyond the water. The route circles back through shaded hardwood stands, with gently descending grades and occasional slick rock slabs—especially in wet or icy conditions. The final stretch leads back to the original trailhead.
This is an easy day hike in the Catskills for families or history-minded hikers, with rewarding views and quiet forest terrain close to the Ashokan Reservoir.
