Description
The Mickinnick Trail gets it's unique name from the former land owner, Nicky Pleass, who originally donated the 160 acres to the Forest Service in 1997 in memory of her husband, Mick, and the native Kinnickinnick plant found in the area. The trail was opened in 2005 and is a popular spot to take in the amazing views of the area. The 7 mile out-and-back trail starts by crossing an open field and then continues up into the trees with switchbacks around large rock outcropings. There are a few benches placed along the way and at the top for a perfect place to pause and take in the beauty of the area. Wildflowers line the trail, and panoramic views of Sandpoint, the Cabinet Mountains and Lake Pend Oreille make this hike worth the 2,000-foot climb through loose rock. The trailhead has plenty of parking, information signs, vault toilets, and picnic tables. Be sure to bring a camera for the views!
