Half Dome via Cables

4.9 (243 Ratings)
Rising nearly 4,700 vertical feet above Yosemite Valley on its sheer northwest face, Half Dome is one of the most recognized granite objectives in North America — and the cables route delivers a genuine summit experience accessible to any fit, prepared hiker willing to put in a long day. The approach passes two major waterfalls, the Merced River corridor, and miles of high Sierra granite before the final 400-foot cable ascent to an 8,839' summit with unobstructed views in every direction.

Description

The Half Dome via Cables route begins and ends at Happy Isles (4,028') in Yosemite Valley and covers 15.9 miles as a lollipop using the Mist Trail on the ascent and the John Muir Trail on the descent. From Happy Isles, follow signs northeast toward the Vernal Fall Footbridge at 0.8 miles, where treated water and restrooms are available. At the footbridge, bear left onto the Mist Trail and climb the granite staircase alongside Vernal Fall (317'). Continue climbing to the Emerald Pool and Silver Apron, then up to the top of Nevada Fall (594') at 3.5 miles, where the Mist Trail and JMT converge at the composting toilets — follow signs for Half Dome.

The trail enters Little Yosemite Valley and climbs steadily north-northwest through forest before turning southwest toward Half Dome. At 8.2 miles, the Half Dome Trail junction splits right — stay right and begin the Sub Dome switchbacks on open granite. A ranger checks permits at the base of the Sub Dome; permit required to proceed. Climb the switchbacks to the base of the cables at 8.8 miles. Ascend the two fixed steel cables to the summit (8,839') at 9.0 miles — gloves with a firm grip on steel are strongly recommended; do not attempt if the rock is wet. Return from the summit to the Nevada Fall junction via the same trail. At the Nevada Fall composting toilets, turn right onto the John Muir Trail and descend 4.0 miles on wide, switchbacking trail to Happy Isles.
