Description
Alpine Way to Goat Lake is a 22.8-mile out-and-back on the east side of the Sawtooth Wilderness. The route starts from the Alpine Way Trailhead, located off of Highway 75 just outside of Stanley, Idaho. It begins with an ascent into the Wilderness via the Alpine Way Trail #7528. It travels north across the base of the Sawtooth Mountains, past Marshall Lake, and to the junction with Goat Lake Trail. Turn left at the junction and continue to ascend all the way to the lake.There are some dirt roads, mostly singletrack, and a few sections of light rock scrambling near the lake. The trail takes you through pine-shaded forests and open meadows. You'll cross flowing streams and pass alpine lakes. The most challenging stretch of this route is on the Goat Lake Trail. The terrain is steep and rocky and the trail can be difficult to find at times. This moderate challenge is offset by expansive vistas, a stunning view of the mountains, and amazing photo opportunities.This is not a route to take if you are looking for solitude, the trails in this area are incredibly popular for hiking, trail running, and backpacking. Overall, it is a moderate to strenuous hike with an elevation gain of 4,365' and incredible scenery along the way.WHEN TO VISITJuly - AugustWILDERNESS PERMITSThe route takes place in the Sawtooth Wilderness, which requires visitors to have a free Wilderness Use Permit. A permit can be obtained at various trailheads and within the Wilderness boundary by self-registration. To preserve and protect this beautiful landscape, Sawtooth Wilderness visitors must abide by the regulations of the Sawtooth Wilderness.
