Description
Skyline Trail #465 is a 30.9-mile point-to-point route through the La Garita Wilderness. It starts at the Eddiesville Trailhead, on the east side of the Wilderness, and heads west. Although the Skyline #465 Trail officially ends at the Tumble Creek Trailhead, this route continues south for approximately three miles to the Spring Creek Pass Trailhead, where you'll find a parking lot, picnic table, information board, and bathroom facilities. This route has an elevation gain of 6,923' overall and spends a significant amount of time above 10,000 feet. It can be completed as-is or used as a jumping off point to explore other parts of the La Garita Wilderness. Several intersecting trails make it easy to extend the overall distance, alter the route, or shorten the trek if needed. Whatever you choose, remember this is a point-to-point route, so you'll have to figure out transportation from one end to the other. This moderate to strenuous route is open to runners, hikers, backpackers, and horseback riders.DESCRIPTIONThe Skyline #465 follows Cochetopa Creek upstream from the Eddiesville Trailhead. It ascends towards the continental divide, skirting the southern base of San Luis Peak (14,014') and crossing two trails that lead to its summit (climbing San Luis Peak would add approximately 3-4 miles depending on the route). Continuing west along the divide, the trail traverses alpine tundra and talus slopes. The trail reaches the base of Mount Baldy Cinco (13,375'), turns north, and descends into Tumble Creek Drainage. Lastly, the route heads south from Tumble Creek Trailhead to Spring Creek Pass. REGULATIONSThe majority of the Skyline #465 Trail is within the La Garita Wilderness. Please respect the following rules and regulations which are in place for the protection of the La Garita Wilderness. Camping and campfires are not allowed within 100 feet of lakes, streams and trails, above treeline, within 300 feet of Machin Lake or within the Wheeler Geologic Area.Caching is prohibited. Cutting switchbacks on trails is prohibited. Certified weed-free forage is required for all stock. The full list of rules and regulations for the area can be found at www.wilderness.net.
