Chisos Basin Loop

This loop in Big Bend National Park makes a nice mini-tour of the Chisos Mountains' environment that is suitable for families and anyone seeking a moderate hike with nice views. Wildlife like birds and deer are common sights, and you may even spot more reclusive residents like javelina. The chisos mountains are home to nearly 200 kinds of birds, whether permanently or seasonally, because this high-elevation retreat above the desert is a crucial stopover for many migratory species. You will also see the interesting mix of low and high desert plants that grow here, from cactus and yucca to juniper and pine. Then there are the mountain vistas that surround throughout the hike: Craggy peaks rise overhead in every direction. Try to identify landmarks like Emory Peak (the tallest in the range), The Pinnacles, Casa Grande Peak, and The Window. The route links the first parts of Pinnacle Trail and Laguna Meadows Trail in a unique loop. Pay attention to signs so you don't end up too far up the wrong trail. The loop is good in either direction, but counterclockwise is a bit easier and leads to the best views. There is no water along the trail, and shade is scarce. The distance is less than 2 miles, but you should still bring more water and snacks than you think you will need.
