Hohokam Trail

The Hohokam Trail is a moderately difficult hike at the McKenzie Ranch Trails Park near Vail, AZ. This trail explores the southern foothills of the Rincon Mountains.This out-and-back hike offers mountain views and beautiful desert scenery. This trail is 6.6 miles long and gains over 600 feet of elevation.This trail takes its name from a Native American culture. The Hohokam existed in parts of Arizona from 300-1500 CE.This hike begins from a small dirt parking lot off of S Agua Verde Rd. Begin hiking East on the Hohokam Trail. Shortly after you start hiking, you will cross through a fence under a decorative Hohokam sign. This trail has some ups and downs, but it is never too steep. The first 0.4 miles are mostly uphill. The trail is mostly downhill for the next 0.2 miles.Along the way, this trail provides great views of Rincon Peak to the north. The Whetstone, Empire, and Santa Rita Mountains to the south. The trail continues to be mostly uphill for the next 1.6 miles before reaching the highest point of the trail. As you trek uphill, you will be walking amongst creosote, prickly pear, and various other desert plants.From the high point of the trail, enjoy 0.5 miles of downhill hiking. There is now just 0.7 miles uphill until you reach S Red Hill Ranch Rd and a parking lot. This signifies the end of the Hohokam Trail. Retrace your steps to return to the trailhead.The Hohokam Trail is open year-round from dawn to dusk. There are no associated fees to hike at McKenzie Ranch Trails Park. Dogs are allowed on this hike, but they must be on a leash at all times. This trail is also shared with bikers and horseback riders. The Hohokam Trail is a wonderful opportunity to appreciate mountain views and desert beauty.
