Description
The Loon Lake Trail is a 1.2-mile-long trail that follows the shores of Loon Lake in Savanna Portage State Park. Savanna Portage State Park is located near McGregor, Minnesota. There is a fee to enter the park; a day use or annual permit can be purchased at the Park Office. Dogs are allowed on this trail when on a leash. Parking for this trail is located by the Loon Lake picnic area which has a playground, a fishing dock, a boat launch, and a swimming beach. Canoe rentals are also available here. Loon Lake is 34 acres in size. This trail can be found near the lake at either end of the picnic grounds. The trail is easy to follow as it stays near the lake for its entire length. The trail is a narrow dirt trail with a boardwalk over a wet section. Be aware that portions of the trail can be flooded when the lake level is high. The hike around Loon Lake is wooded with hardwoods and large White Pines. The hike has little elevation gain but one should watch out for numerous roots on the trail. There are a few spots along the way where one could cast a fishing pole. If you are looking for a short, pleasant hike while visiting Savanna Portage State Park this trail should fit the bill. A map of the park and its hiking trails can be found here: https://files.dnr.state.mn.us/maps/state_parks/spk00259_summer.pdf
