South Fortuna Mountain

South Fortuna Peak is a perfect hike for those who want to want to get away from the city without the drive. Just under 20 minutes from downtown San Diego, it features panoramic views of Mission Trails Regional Park and the surrounding suburban communities. During the spring dozens of wildflower species bloom alongside the trail. The hike begins near the southern entrance to Mission Trails Regional Park at the Visitor Center Loop Trailhead. The path crosses the San Diego River after about a quarter of a mile. Keep in mind that there is no bridge that crosses over, so it may be occasionally impassible after a heavy rainstorm. In half a mile, bear right at the fork and follow the signs for Suycott Valley Trail. Shortly after crossing the Suycott Wash footbridge, bear right once again to follow the South Fortuna Trail. This section of the hike is rather steep and follows a long stretch of stairs to the summit. At the peak, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of San Diego county. On a clear day the view extends to the Pacific Ocean and Mexico.
