Description
From the parking lot on Highbanks and Buckeye Falls Drive, head north on the paved Parking Connector trail until you reach the boathouse. Make your way around the boathouse and head toward the lake on the paved pathway, this is the Shared-use Trail (Harbor Loop). Head under the Kemper Bridge and follow along the lakeside. Go under the I-275 bridge and over the northernmost point of the lake, heading back on the east side of the lake. Follow this just past the Kemper Bridge and veer left at the split. Stay on this path till the steps, cross over Buckeye Hills Drive and head up the hill on the Gorge Trail. The Gorge Trail is different from most at the woods in that it is not paved, but is a wide doubletrack (plus) gravel and dirt, which is a nice break from asphalt. Stay on the Gorge Trail (don't miss out on the multiple waterfalls on the trail) until you come to the intersection of Buckeye Falls Drive (small turn around). Stay to the left edge of the road surface to continue on the Gorge Trail until you reach the intersection of Buckeye Falls Drive again and cross to the north. Continue on to meet the Buckeye Falls Loop, veer right and stay on this path (it will eventually merge with the Fitness Trail via the Fitness Connector). Stay on the Fitness Trail until you cross Highbanks and you'll be back at your car!
History & Background
