Static Peak

At 11,303 feet in elevation, Static Peak is a notable summit in the Teton Range of Grand Teton National Park. It's a very challenging hike to the top, but is a rare non-technical summit in the park. This hike is over 16 miles long and gains over 5,000 feet of elevation.The most common route up Static Peak starts at the Death Canyon Trailhead. The last mile of road before the trailhead is a dirt road with many rocks and ruts. From the trailhead, you will begin hiking on the Valley Trail. After about 1 mile of gradual uphill hiking you will reach Phelps Lake Overlook where you will have a great view of the lake below. You will then continue downhill on the Valley Trail for 0.7 miles, and then you will take the Death Canyon Trail. You will start with a short section of downhill on the Death Canyon Trail. After this, you will be hiking uphill the rest of the way to the summit. Once you have traveled just over 2 miles on this trail you will come to the Death Canyon Patrol Cabin. This is where you start hiking up the Alaska Basin Trail.This trail involves numerous switchbacks, but rewards you with terrific views of Death Canyon and the end of each switchback. After hiking for about 3.2 miles you will come to a saddle between Albright Peak and Static Peak. From here, you have a very clear view of the summit of Static Peak. Continue on the Alaska Basin Trail for 0.8 more miles before reaching Static Peak Divide.Once at the divide, it is only 0.3 miles up a steep slope to reach the top of Static Peak. From the summit you will have a wonderful view of the Jackson Hole Valley as well as many peaks in the Teton Range.You will also see Timberline Lake below.Hiking to the top of Static Peak is a challenging endeavor, but the incredible views you will see make the suffering worth it.
