Description
The Waterfalls Trail is likely the most popular trail at Mill Creek Nature Park to see the scenic waterfalls that are located on spur trails off of this trail and the Catwalk Trail that the Waterfalls Trail connects to. From the parking area outside of Narrows, travel south along the eastern side of the creek on the unmarked Butternut Trail (you'll be going upstream with the creek on your right. Do not cross the footbridge). After 0.4 miles, you'll come to a small camping shelter nearby to a historic, yet still functional hand-cut stone dam dating back to the 1780s. Just past the shelter are signs for the Butternut Trail which switchbacks uphill to the left, and the Waterfalls Trail which continues to parallel Mill Creek. The trail continues steeply uphill, sometimes through rock gardens. Short spur trails to waterfalls are signed on the main trail. After approximately 0.5 miles on the Waterfalls Trail, you'll reach its southern terminus at an intersection with the Catwalk Trail. Taking the Catwalk Trail to the right will take you past more waterfalls. You can create a short lollipop loop back to your car by taking the Catwalk Trail to the left and taking another left to go down the Butternut Trail back to the parking lot. Be sure to dress in bright colors during hunting season (generally fall and winter). The town of Narrows and nearby Pearisburg both have many trails and are investing in outdoor recreation. Stop in at local restaurants and stores to support these small towns so they continue to encourage outdoor recreation!
