Stagecoach Road Historic Trail

The Stagecoach Road Historical Trail is found within the Savage Gulf State Natural Area between the Collins Rim Trail and the Connector Trail. This trail can be used to make a 12+ mile loop by hiking the Collins Rim Trail, the Stagecoach Road Trail, the Connector Trail, and then the Collins Gulf Trail. The Stagecoach Road Historical Trail was originally a section of a toll road built in the 1840s, and so most of the trail is much wider than a traditional hiking trail. However, after over 150 years of erosion, the trail is very rocky, not smooth or anything resembling what you might imagine a coach could have used. Watch your step, and travel from Collins Gulf Trail down to the Connector Trail if you want the 8% grade to work in your favor. Though there are plenty of steeper trail sections on other Savage Gulf trails, the entire length of this trail is a steady grade, and hiking up it would be a chore. There are no remarkable waterfalls or creeks, mostly just a quiet wooded path, passing over an occasional stream. Look for the rock wall that was built to widen the path along one rock face.
