Creve Coeur Connector

The Creve Coeur Connector is a paved, multi-use path extending 2.8 miles. The path connects the Katy Trail with Creve Coeur Park. Though the path parallels Page avenue, don't let that deter you from using this lovely path. Along the way, hikers will get to pass around Little Creve Coeur Lake, and will continue on pas the marsh. These historic features are even identifiable as far back as the 1800's, based on maps and plates created of the area. As you cross the Maryland Heights Express way, take a moment to observe the marsh to your left. This small wetland is a remnant of what the Missouri River Valley looked like before development, and is one of the largest surviving wetlands in the county. Especially in the summer months, the wetland abounds in wading birds, such as soras, and bitterns. The next feature that hikers will pass on their way to Creve Coeur is the Memetonwish wetland/prairie area. Planted with native grasses and wildflowers, this area is another must stop for birders. With 100 acres of natural habitat, this is a good place to spot the occasional Northern Harrier and other native avian species. Spring and summer are the best months to visit. As you continue on, you'll note that much of the land in the area is returning to a more natural state, with an influx of native grasses and wildflowers. The Parks Department has partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, St. Louis Audubon Society, the Howard Bend Levee District, the U.S. Corps of Engineers, the City of Maryland Heights and the Saint Louis County Highways and Traffic Department to return this previously farmed area to its natural ecosystem. The trail continues past all of these beautiful features. A parking lot to access the connector trail is located just off of River Valley Road. At this parking lot there is one more mile of park trail and 1.3 miles over the Missouri River until the Katy Trail is reached.
