There and Back
The hike begins at the Cottonwood Lakes Trailhead, where ample parking is available. The first 1.5 miles follow the Cottonwood Lakes Trail, gradually ascending through a mix of pine forest and sagebrush meadows. At the junction, turn left onto the South Fork Cottonwood Creek Trail, which meanders alongside the creek, offering shaded stretches and occasional open terrain with expansive views of the surrounding peaks. The trail continues through alpine meadows dotted with foxtail pines and seasonal wildflowers. As you gain elevation, the landscape transitions to rocky slopes with panoramic views. At the next junction, take the left fork toward Cirque Lake, where a final push leads you to the shimmering alpine waters tucked beneath dramatic granite cliffs. Cirque Lake is an excellent place to rest, set up camp, take in the views, or enjoy a refreshing dip before retracing your steps back to the trailhead.
