Loop
The Tanbark Loop begins behind Parish Field in the village of Phoenicia, climbing steeply through a mix of hardwood forest and rocky outcrops before gaining a forested ridge. After a brief but rugged ascent, the trail levels out and passes several open ledges with wide views of the Esopus Valley and surrounding peaks, including Panther Mountain and the Slide Mountain Wilderness. Around halfway, the route follows old quarry grades, where remnants of past industry remain visible among the trees.
From the high point, the trail gradually descends through quiet woods, eventually reconnecting with the lower trail section near the start. Expect short but steep sections, slippery rocks when wet, and occasional black bear activity—bear awareness is recommended. This route is accessible year-round, but traction devices are advised during snow or ice. Despite its short distance, the Tanbark Loop offers a rewarding climb with expansive Catskill views.
