Description
Vickery Creek is part of the National Chattahoochee River Recreation Area and encompasses a network of trails that make for a great trail run or hike without venturing far outside the city limits. The ruins of a network of mills that was once the largest cotton producer in North Georgia sits on this particular part of the recreation area. The wooden covered bridge across Big Creek was recently rebuilt, and work was done in 2008 to clear brush and enhance the conservation effort. In 2000, a memorial was also made public for the post-Civil War deportations of 400 mill workers to Indiana, a refugee situation in which there were many reports of deaths by starvation and other abuses. Surrounding the rich history of the site is a wonderful shaded and scenic network of trails with ample signage and seating to rest. A spillway dam waterfall and rolling terrain makes a lovely family outing with activities for many fitness levels. Starting one of the south entrances, of which there are several, climb the ridge and turn left for quickest access to the bridge, mills, and falls. Loop around clockwise to take a more secluded path back to your vehicle, keep an eye out for deer and an array of bird species.
