The Bluff Trail skirts along the side of the ridge heading north and east through disintegrating lava flows. Within a few hundred yards of its start at the Gravel Springs Hut Road, the trail passes the Harris Hollow Spur and Harris Hollow Trail before heading off toward its next junction with the Big Devils Stairs Trail at approximately mile 1.6.
Up until this point, the trail generally doesn't gain or lose much elevation as it continues parallel with the contours of the ridge.
After passing the turn for the Big Devils Stairs Trail, the Bluff Trail descends very gradually through the forest towards its end junction with the Mt Marshall Trail, just north of the Thoroughfare Gap.
