Description
The Ben Lomond Trail is a great way to get to Ben Lomond Peak. It is a gradual 6-mile climb to the saddle. You'll probably see a moose or two. If climbing the trail as mapped, start at the North Fork Park's southwestern most parking lot, hike left going northwest past the corral. Continue on singletrack through the trees, then after a few hundred yards, merge onto a doubletrack trail. Continue on the dirt road until you see singletrack on the right side. Head onto the singletrack to keep climbing through more trees with major roots, rocks, and several switchbacks. The top of the trail ends at a "T" intersection. Left follows the Skyline Trail south for a nice descent with some exposed edges and tricky ruts. Heading right would continue up the Skyline Trail along a series of very steep switchbacks to the Ben Lomond Peak. During the summer months, it can get really dusty and loose. And when you hit the trees heading back down, expect some roots to navigate. The rest of the singletrack back to the parking lot is a nice, smooth, and shady hike through the trees.
