Description
Downs Mountain (13,350 ft) is the northernmost named 13er in the Wind River Range. It's a long hike in to reach the mountain, but from the summit you'll have expansive 360 degree views including the distant Tetons, Gros Ventre and Wyoming Range, and of course the Wind River Range including Gannett Peak. One possible route in begins from the Trail Lakes Trailhead. From here you'll follow the New Glacier Trail as it climbs steadily through Bomber Basin and eventually up to Glacier Trail Pass. The pass is where you'll leave the trail and begin route finding your way toward Downs Mountain. Although exposed, Glacier Trail Pass is the last good camping option. If the weather is looking bad, consider turning back - the route ahead is extremely exposed. From the pass, work your way up onto Goat Flat. You'll steadily gain elevation as you find your way across the increasingly talus laden landscape. After reaching a high point you'll descend slightly to No Mans Pass. From here begins the final push up Downs Mountain. You'll work your way up the east side of the mountain. A large snowfield provides an alternative to rock hopping. Depending on conditions the snow may provide a quicker route to the top. If not comfortable on the steep snow slope, you can ascend the talus around the edge of the snowfield.Continue working your way toward the top until you can see the three distinct summit mounds. The middle mound is the highest point where you'll find a USGS benchmark.Enjoy the stunning views in all directions, including down to Goat Flat that you just crossed. When ready, return back to Trail Lake Trailhead the way you came.
