Description
The Silver Terrace Historic Cemeteries Loop Trail traces a hard packed dirt walking path through the scenic and historic cemeteries of Virginia City.Perched onto a hillside on the town's north end, the Silver Terraces include 10 seperate burial grounds, including those belonging to the city's varying organizations, including the Masonic plot, Oddfellows, Knights of Pythias, and Firemen, among others. The cemetery has created an audio tour that can be downloaded by visitors that contains 29 stops with explanations and stories pertaining the the different areas and individual grave sites. The trail is hard packed rock and dirt, varying between single track trail and gravel road. Due to some slippery points, it is easy-to-moderate in difficulty, and pretty short. Though this trail is just a circular route through the different cemeteries, and those looking just to view the area can opt to stick to easier and more level roads that bypass some of the single track areas.Consistent with the bit of quirkiness with the town itself, visitors to the cemeteries may find themselves sharing the paths with the bands of wild horses that roam the mountains and sometimes wander through the center of the town. Another of the benefits of this hike are the wide open views of the historical buildings on C Street in the distance, and Mount Davidson towering above the town. The 1.1 mile trail begins with a small ascent before falling in elevation as it approaches the Catholic Cemtery. The return portion of the hike will be up a gradual uphill. There is no water or bathrooms located at the hike. Only brochures and instructions for downloading the audio tour.Dogs are permitted on leash. The cemeteries are open daily from 8am to 7pm.
