Description
This route starts on the Quebradas Backcountry Byway in the rugged colorful high desert east of Socorro. The route connects a series of two-track trails, singletrack trails, and some cross-country travel into an engaging loop route. The trail starts heading east on the Byway and drops on a rough two-track down to Bursum Spring (also known as Ojo De Amado). The spring is one of the few areas in this desert landscape that has water year round and is a critical water source for local wildlife and a popular recreation spot when the water is clear. The spring is fed by a rocky waterfall which you climb around and continue up the rugged arroyo as part of this loop. The arroyo is generally easy to follow, initially through rocky outcroppings smoothed by errosion and eventually through the sandy wash as you approach Minas Del Chupadero. When a two-track jeep trail crosses your path you continue south following the OHV route. The two-track provides access to the Hogback Trail which climbs to provide vistas of the high desert, river valley and Socorro peak. The south boundary jeep road follows a high line with views of the nearby wilderness study areas before dropping back into the lower elevations via La Madre Trail which winds through the high desert landscape. The final jeep road out of Arroyo de los Pinos returns you to the parking lot.
