Description
If you are looking for an easy way to get a summit in the Wasatch, then Peak 10,420 is perfect for you. Pronounced "Ten Four Twenty," it has some really amazing views that you can access in under a mile. Granted you have a very steep hike up to the peak, but it is easily one of the shortest hikes to access serious vistas in the area. You immediately begin the climb starting off at Guardsman's Pass, and it really doesn't flatten out much until you reach the top. Thick pine forests hug the west side of the mountain during the ascent, but the eastern slope offers some incredible unblocked sights. You can see Park City, the Uinta mountains, Heber City, and Blood's Lake during the ascent. Once you reach the summit you will get the other half of the 360-degree views that include Clayton Peak, almost all of Big Cottonwood, Mount Timpanogos, and even Mount Superior in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The trail is dog friendly, there are great wildflowers in summer, and many people use this spot to do incredible backcountry skiing during winter. Continue on the trail to summit Clayton Peak or to reach Lackawaxen Lake. You really get a great scope of the area from this peak. You can see down into so many different recreational hot-spots that you might have previously frequented. Peak 10,420 is a great way to get a new perspective on an old area.
