Description
The Wetmore Shoreline Trail is a must do hike if you are in the Marquette, Michigan area. This is a 3.6 mile out-and-back hike along the beautiful shores of Lake Superior. This hike features views of rocky shoreline, cliffs, and beautiful beaches. Most of this hike follows the North Country Trail through a forest that includes large pine trees. Dogs on a leash are allowed on this trail. There are parking areas at each end of this hike. At the south end is Wetmore Landing and at the north is Little Presque Isle. Both parking areas are located north of Marquette off Country Road 550. Parking at either of these lots requires a Michigan Recreation Pass. When starting from the Wetmore Landing parking area, follow the path a short distance down to a large, sandy beach. Here you will head north on the well-worn North Country Trail which is marked with blue blazes. Early in this hike you will encounter some rocky sections before going up a long flight of steps. The higher vantage point of the trail after the stairs provides some amazing views of Lake Superior and the shoreline. The shore includes rocky outcrops, cliffs, and secluded beaches. Eventually, the trail heads down another set of steps to bring you closer to the gorgeous shores of Lake Superior. The hike continues near the lake until you reach Little Presque Isle. After taking in the views of Little Presque Isle, retrace your steps back to Wetmore Landing. The hike from Wetmore Landing to Little Presque Isle is stunningly scenic and is a pretty easy hike aside from two sets of stairs and a few rocky sections.
