Description
The Mule Deer Trail in White Tank Regional Park is a moderate trail that can be done as an out and back or a point to point. The trail is mostly flat with one moderate climb going in each direction. Hikers can start at the north end of the trail at the horseback staging area; this area is also the start of the Mesquite Canyon Trail. Hikers should park at the far east side of the lot and look for the well-marked start of the trail. Hikers will set out east until they reach the trail junction with the Maricopa Trail and will follow the signs to start heading north. From there hikers will follow a single switch back on the only climb of the trail (two climbs if this is done as an out and back). As hikers work their way up the foothill they will get gorgeous views of the White Tanks to the South. Once they work their way around the hill they will get spectacular views of the West Valley of Phoenix and the Estrella Mountains to the south. Very shortly after the trail begins to descend there are several benches where hikers can take a break and are the perfect spot to catch a sunrise. From here hikers will work their way towards the park entrance and the trail is mostly flat. Hikers will cross the main road throughout the park and continue to follow signs for the Mule Deer Trail. Hikers will eventually merge with the South Trail which is where they can turn around and work their way back to their car or follow the South Trail to a different parking area (for hikers doing a point to point trail). This is a great hike in the White Tanks to enjoy the desert scenery without a major uphill climb.
