This strenuous backcountry route begins and ends at the Denning Trailhead, following the marked trail toward the East Branch of the Neversink River. After a gradual climb through mixed hardwood forest, turn south near the river to leave the maintained path and begin the off-trail ascent of Rocky Mountain. The bushwhack portion begins roughly a short distance past the river crossing, entering a dense boreal zone with limited visibility and heavy understory. From Rocky’s summit, continue west along the ridge to Lone Mountain, where terrain remains steep and navigation can be challenging. There are no marked trails between the peaks—strong map and compass skills are essential.
After reaching Lone’s summit, descend north toward the river basin to rejoin the trail near the initial junction. Several seasonal streams offer water sources, but filtration is necessary. Wildlife encounters are common in this quiet section of the Slide Mountain Wilderness, and bear canisters are strongly recommended. Winter ascents may require snowshoes or traction devices depending on conditions. The high-elevation forest, off-trail navigation, and isolated summits make this one of the most rugged day hikes in the Catskills.
