This trailhead serves as the gateway to the scenic wonders you'll encounter en route to Marie Lake.The trail begins amidst a forest of Lodgepole Pines, gradually ascending to the picturesque Piute Pass. As you climb, the trail unveils sprawling meadows and invites crossings over pristine mountain streams.Descending into Humphreys Basin, hikers are treated to expansive views that lead to the tranquil waters of Marie Lake, a perfect representation of the serene high Sierra environment and a great place to camp for the night.FLORA AND FAUNATransition through ecosystems, starting with dry chaparral and evolving into woodlands speckled with pines and oaks. Keep your senses alert for wildlife including deer, various birds, and other mountain inhabitants.PERMITSBackcountry permits are required for overnight trips. Day trips do not require a permit. Quota season runs from May 1st - November 1st, during this time permits are limited to 30 a day. Remember, there is no potable water on-site, so come prepared with filtration or treatment options for natural water sources.This trek is best suited for the experienced hiker.
