Description
The Hewitt-Butler (blue-blazed) Trail in Norvin Green State Forest is one of many popular trails in the 5,400-acre park. This out-and-back style trail features several exciting points of interest including Yoo-Hoo Point, !Otter Hole, Torne Mountain, and Osio Rock. It's an out-and back-style trail at 6.4 miles so be sure to plan accordingly for a round-trip of 13 miles. It can easily be combined with other trails is Norvin Green State Forest as well. The trail is rugged in places and with an elevation gain of 1,400 feet it can be challenging, but well worth your time. Osio Rock has 360-degree panoramic views and even a very distant view of the NYC skyline on a clear day. !Otter Hole is a picturesque cascade off !Posts Brook (especially in the spring), and there are multiple other points of elevation that have nice views of the surrounding ridges, especially in autumn. The most interesting portion of the trail is the 'stone living room' near Torne Mountain. Literally a living room made of stone and created by anonymous masons, these stone chairs and tables were built with vigor but also with an unknown purpose in mind. It is one of the more interesting destinations of any New Jersey trail.
