Holter Ridge Trail

The Holter Ridge Trail is accessible from Bald Hills Road at the south end and Lost Man Creek Trail at the north end. The Redwood National and State Parks' watershed restoration program has successfully removed and restored more than two-hundred miles of old logging roads and skid trails within the park since 1978. Around six miles of the Holter Ridge Trail have been restored in the last few years to minimize erosion and to maintain open access for visitors and administrative park employees alike. Along the Holter Ridge Trail, sections of dense second-growth forest have been thinned in an effort to encourage the restoration of old-growth forest characteristics. This region was logged before the Redwood National Park was established in 1968. The Parks' Second-Growth Forest Restoration Plan requires the removal of trees along ridgelines, like Holter Ridge, in order to reduce the number of downed trees.
