There and Back
Park at the Coney Flats Trailhead and head out on Coney Flats Road #507.1 to reach Buchanan Pass Trail. The trail is relatively easy-going here and shouldn't pose too much trouble as you wind through the forest. Once you reach Buchanan Pass Trail, you'll start to have some glimpses of the mountainous terrain. The trail can be rocky at times to swatch your footing. When you reach Saint Vrain Glacier Trail, the grade starts to climb a bit more and the traffic will thin out. It's much quieter on this section of trail as most people stay on Buchanan Pass Trail to head to Red Deer Lake. The trail starts to climb a bit more and as it does, the trees thin a bit more as well, offering great views of the surrounding basin. Gibraltar Lakes sit at the base of several cirques that create this basin and the views of the craggy walls are pretty impressive.
