From just south of Avalanche Lake along the Avalanche Pass Trail trail you'll see a fork, keep to the left for this trail or right to stay on Avalanche Pass Trail. Lake Colden will come into view after a few minutes. The trail can be muddy...but so can all of the High Peaks Wilderness Area, so this shouldn't come as news if you have already made it down the Avalanche Pass Trail!
The southern side of Lake Colden offers some lovely unobstructed views of Algonquin Peak and its lush green slopes. Other than the views of Algonquin and what seemed like slightly less traffic, the side of the lake you choose to hike along doesn't really matter - both this trail and Avalanche Pass Trail meet back up on the southwestern end of Lake Colden at the Calamity Brook Trail.
