Loop
This moderate loop begins at the Coxing Trailhead in Mohonk Preserve near Gardiner, NY, and explores one of the most geologically striking areas in the Shawangunks. Follow the High Peters Kill Trail west from the parking area, crossing a small stream and continuing past the historic Enderly Burial Ground. After a short distance, turn right at a junction toward the Trapps and Lost City cliffs. The route soon enters a rugged zone of fractured conglomerate rock known as “Lost City,” where boulder scrambles and narrow chutes demand careful footing and hands-on movement in places.
Above the rock labyrinth, the trail climbs to the exposed Dickie Barre ridgeline, with expansive views east to the Hudson Valley and west toward the Catskills. Skytop Tower and other prominent Shawangunk landmarks are visible along this stretch. From the ridge, stay alert for faint connector paths leading back toward the Coxing Trailhead. Be cautious near cliff edges and rock crevices—this area has documented copperhead sightings. The route eventually descends back into forest and reconnects with the High Peters Kill Trail near the start. Ideal for a short but adventurous outing, this hike rewards with standout views and unique terrain.
