Description
This route begins and ends at Henrys Fork Trailhead. Start at the Henrys Fork Trailhead and head south on the Henrys Fork Trail. At 2.4 miles, pass the junction for the Alligator Lake spur trail on the right, continuing straight. Hike through subalpine meadows to Elkhorn Crossing at 5.4 miles. Stay straight at the junction to follow the more direct route along the east side of the river. Pass Dollar Lake on the left at approximately 7.4 miles, which is a common campsite. Continue south into the upper Henrys Fork Basin. Climb 1,000 vertical feet to reach Gunsight Pass at 10.2 miles. Descend approximately 400 vertical feet into Painter Basin, then turn right (west) at 11.7 miles to contour along the base of the cliffs and join the Highline Trail. Follow the Highline Trail northwest, climbing steadily to Anderson Pass at 14.2 miles. From Anderson Pass, turn left (south) to leave the maintained trail. Begin a half-mile boulder scramble along the rugged north ridge, climbing 800 vertical feet to the summit of Kings Peak. Retrace your steps to return. In poor weather, avoid 'The Chute' descent northeast of Anderson Pass due to extreme hazard from loose talus.
