Path Type
There and Back
The route begins at Grinnell Glacier Trailhead near the Many Glacier Hotel and follows the north shore of Swiftcurrent Lake before crossing to the south shore of Lake Josephine. An optional boat shuttle across both lakes is available seasonally near the trailhead and significantly reduces the flat lake-walking distance. At the far end of Lake Josephine, turn left at the signed junction and begin climbing southwest into the upper valley. The trail gains elevation steadily through open terrain below the cliff bands of Mount Grinnell to the north and Mount Gould to the south. A short spur to the right leads to a cascade viewpoint — continue straight to stay on the main trail. The route climbs via switchbacks onto the lateral moraine above Grinnell Lake, where the full scale of the cirque opens ahead. The final approach crosses rocky moraine terrain to the viewpoint above Upper Grinnell Lake and the glacier. The upper basin is active grizzly habitat — travel in groups and carry bear spray. Retrace your steps to return.
