Hermit Gulch to Golf Course Loop

This hike is one of the better easy/moderate hikes easily accessible from Avalon on foot that does not require a backcountry permit.Tracing a fireroad along the mountainside, the route remains generally level as it emerges from Avalon Canyon, opening to elevated perspectives on the island's rugged interior hills, and probably most rewardingly, uniquely wide perspectives over the town of Avalon and the harbor, with mainland Southern California visible in the distance on clearer days.The path begins at a gate across the road from Hermit Gulch Campground, with only a small bit of climbing up an easy grade, the road stays mostly level as it parallels the descending Avalon Canyon Road. The road is wide and very well-graded. At about .85 miles in from the trailhead, the road reaches its most majestic view over Avalon. Those campers who just want an easy morning walk may opt to turn around and head back here. From this point, the trail begins a sharper descent before emerging at the golf course. Hiker/mountain biking passage through the golf course is permitted by remaining on the paved path and crossing the bridge right in front of you before following the path back out to Avalon Canyon Road. From here it is a quick walk back into Avalon, or to complete the loop, hikers can head up the sometimes protected/sometimes only marked shoulder of the road back to the trailhead/campground.The path is partially shady. Water and bathrooms are available at Hermit Gulch Campground.Consider adding this if walking or cycling to Wrigley Botanical Gardens.
