Rocky Hollow Falls Canyon Nature Preserve: Trail 3

On the northern side of Sugar Creek in Turkey Run State Park lies Rocky Hollow Falls Canyon Nature Preserve. This 1,609-acre park was designated a national landmark in 1974. The region is best known for its deep, moss-covered Mansfield sandstone gorges. There are 11 trails within Turkey Run and Rocky Hollow totaling 14 miles. Of the six designated trails within Rocky Hollow Falls Canyon, the most rugged and interesting of these is Trail #3. Parking in the main lot at Turkey Run State Park, hikers follow the spur trail to the suspension bridge over Sugar Creek. Across the bridge take Trail #3 west (left) following the trail clockwise. Hikers will be challenged by deep narrow gorges, sturdy wooden ladders, and continuous streams along and on the trail. Visit in the fall for the driest hike, or come prepared to do a little creek splashing in the spring and early summer. These trails will be muddy, slippery, and possibly impassible during and just after rainfall. Check the weather before starting as the narrow gorges do not allow for a quick exit.
