Gothic Mountain

The trail starts at the Washington Gulch trailhead at 9,650 feet. Start uphill on singletrack through beautiful wildflowers, if it's that time of year. But if you missed the wildflowers, the fire weed displays of reds, oranges and yellows in the fall are fantastic to see as well. The trail gains elevation quickly as you climb the switchbacks and there isn't much shade. A little over 2 miles in, you'll see a junction and a cairn. Go left here, following Gothic Mountain which is looming overhead. You're in the woods for a while, gaining elevation and maneuvering over and around downed logs. Once the trees start to disappear, the trail gets really steep and rocky. Some of it is loose, so watch your step. After a while, the rocks become bigger and you follow a rocky trail on the ridge. It's certainly tiring but very rewarding views at the summit with a summit elevation of 12,620 feet. Enjoy gawking at all the surrounding peaks and valleys! On your way down, pay attention to where the trail leaves the woods to head back to the junction because it's not very well-marked.
