Description
A Harrisonburg classic, Reddish Knob is a popular spot for sightseers, hikers and all types of cyclists. Timber Ridge descends from Reddish Knob off Shenandoah Mountain towards Tillman Road. Beginning at the top of Reddish Knob, the trail heads down a steep rocky section of stairs ending with a ninety degree lefthand turn. It continues down towards a road crossing through steep and rocky trail surface. After the trail crosses the road, it continues through a rhodo tunnel of love and spits out on a super-rough rocky section followed by a sustained wide-open descent. Following the main descent, the trail rolls east towards some decisions. If one chooses to continue on Timber Ridge Trail to the bottom, they'll be spit out right next to Tillman West close to Hearthstone Lake. The bottom half of Timber Ridge is commonly known as Hearthstone Ridge, but the map says otherwise. After the Wolf/Timber split, there is another intersection with Sand Spring Trail which will be to the left. Continue to the right to stay on Timber, the trail gets used less frequently but is totally awesome singletrack with some rocky sections, log crossings, some climbing, and a creek crossing near the end. For those looking for the path less traveled, the seldom traveled Hearthstone Ridge section of Timber Ridge careens down towards Tillman Road just a few hundred yards from the Tillman West trailhead. Timber Ridge offers many options for descending. The trail intersects at the intersection of Wolf Ridge and then Sand Spring Trail. Lynn Trail (which is more often climbed as part of the Wolf Ridge Loop) does offer a steep one mile descent with sharp turns and rocky sections. One can choose to continue on Wolf Ridge, which offers fun ridge hiking, some steep climbing sections along with some old school feeling trail before the SVBC reroute of the final pitch of Wolf Ridge.
