Ferncliff Trail begins and ends at the Ferncliff trailhead just northwest of downtown Ohiopyle, off Route 381/Mill Run Road. This route follows a well-defined path around Ferncliff Peninsula, a designated State Park Natural Area within Ohiopyle State Park. Hikers pass through mature hardwood forest and walk alongside the Youghiogheny River. From several points near the peninsula’s western edge, the route offers views of Ohiopyle Falls and surrounding rock formations.
The trail includes short side paths to scenic river overlooks and crosses exposed bedrock sections near the water, where fossil impressions and sandstone ledges add geological interest but can make footing uneven. After rain or during spring thaw, expect muddy and slippery sections along the lower trail. Dogs are allowed but should be kept on a leash. Hikers will encounter rich vegetation—hemlocks, ferns, and wildflowers thrive here due to the river-created microclimate. This easy route offers a rewarding walk through one of the best natural features in Ohiopyle State Park.
