This route begins at the Mianus River Gorge Preserve trailhead off Mianus River Road in Bedford, NY. From the kiosk, follow signs for the main trail into a shaded forest filled with mature eastern hemlocks, some more than 400 years old. At an early Y-intersection, stay right to head clockwise through the Old Growth Forest. The trail climbs gradually to reach overlooks of the Mianus River Gorge, with filtered views of the steep-walled valley below. As the route continues, it transitions into more open terrain with evidence of 19th-century farmland—stone walls, old foundations, and meadows slowly being reclaimed by forest. Pileated woodpeckers, chipmunks, and white-tailed deer are often spotted in this section.
The trail eventually swings around and reenters deep forest before returning to the junction near the start. No potable water is available, so bring your own. This is a protected conservation area—hiking only, with no dogs or bikes allowed, and access is limited to the warmer months to reduce wildlife disturbance. This quiet walk through history and old-growth forest makes for one of the best short day hikes in southeastern New York.
