Oak Tree Canyon Loop

Oak Tree Canyon Loop is a 36.2-mile lollipop route that runs along the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains. Located southeast of Tucson, AZ, this moderately rated route features single-track trails and remote dirt roads. It is recommended as an overnight backpacking trip offering beautiful desert scenery and expansive views. The route is open for runners, hikers, long-distance backpackers, equestrians, and mountain bikers, and its proximity to Highway 83 makes it easily accessible and allows for easy adjustment of the length. This route offers a unique blend of challenging terrain, scenic beauty, and the tranquility of nature.Your journey begins at the Oak Tree Canyon Trailhead, where you'll quickly immerse yourself in the area's rich biodiversity. The trail meanders through a variety of landscapes, including lush canyons and arid desert flats. Following the Arizona Trail (AZT), you'll encounter rolling hills, rugged ridgelines, and panoramic views that stretch for miles. The terrain rolls up and down grassy hillsides through fields of ocotillo, prickly pear cactus, and creosote bush, offering spectacular views of the Empire Mountains to the east.FLORA AND FAUNAThe trail is home to an array of plant and animal life. Expect to see towering cacti, flowering desert plants, and a variety of shrubs and trees that provide shade and habitat for wildlife. Keep an eye out for deer, javelinas, and a variety of bird species.
