Description
The Wildflower Ridge Loop is a 1.6-mile-long trail that is located in the Sweetwater Preserve which is west of Tucson, Arizona. The Sweetwater Preserve is 880 acres in size and is part of Pima County Natural Preserve and Trails Park system. The park is open from dawn until dusk. The Sweetwater Preserve has numerous Palo Verde trees and Saguaro Cacti within its hilly boundaries. Other Sonoran Desert plants found in the park include prickly pears, barrel cacti, ocotillo, and cholla. There is a large parking area near the trailhead that is located at 40001 North Tortolita Road. There are no amenities at the trailhead except for a pair of portable toilets. There are no fees to use the Sweetwater Preserve. Dogs are welcome on the trails in the Sweetwater Preserve, but must be on a leash. Mountain bikers are also allowed to use the trails. Begin this hike by taking a left at the trailhead onto the Roller Coaster Trail. Follow the Roller Coaster Trail for 0.2 until it intersects with the Wildflower Ridge Trail. The intersection is well marked; take a sharp left onto the Wildflower Ridge Trail. For the next third of a mile, the trail gradually gains elevation peaking at over a hundred feet higher than the trailhead. At the 0.7 mile mark the trail begins to head in a northeasterly direction, looping back towards the trailhead. At the 1.0 mile mark the Wildflower Ridge Trail ends and joins the Desperado Loop. Stay to the left here and follow the Desperado Loop back to the Roller Coaster Trail and the parking lot.The Wildflower Ridge Loop is a scenic trail near Tucson that is suitable for most abilities. The trail is a narrow, natural surface trail that is mostly smooth. Remember to bring plenty of water and protect yourself from the sun. Also, be aware that this is a popular route for mountain bikers.
