Description
There are now two trailheads available. The just completed lower trailhead is off Highway 238 about 5.3 miles south of Jacksonville, Oregon. There is room here for 10-12 vehicles and a picnic table but there are no other amenities (water or toilet). The upper trailhead is off Sterling Creek Road just over 4 miles south from its junction with Cady Road. There is room here for 10-15 vehicles, a picnic table, and a pit toilet (but no water). There are signs for both trailheads but they are small and easy to miss. A popular option is to arrange a shuttle between the two trailheads so you can hike down the trail, thus enjoying its wonderful views without having to do any significant climbing. If you're climbing from the bottom, pick a cool day, as there's a fair amount of sun exposure (which is very nice in fall/winter/spring) as you climb out to the top. Once on the ridge, it's an easy and very scenic hike to the end of the trail and parking area. You'll have your pick of the views and they are all good as there are sections with some fairly steep exposure! This is a fun one in either direction, just make sure to fill out the register, so the BLM knows all the love this new excellent trail is getting!
