Description
The Rocky Point Trail is a 1.6 mile roundtrip out and back hike from Highway 1 down to the secluded Steep Ravine Beach [add hyperlink] that descends while passing wide views across the Pacific landscape.Lying inside Mt. Tamalpais State Park, this hike drops 450' over the .8 miles from the highway to the beach. Winding down a hardpacked dirt single track path, it weaves within the folds of the canyon before emerging high over the ocean with a gradual descent toward the Steep Ravine Campground. The landscape feels wild up here, and depending on the fog, you may have views stretching north to Bolinas Bay and west to Farallon National Wildlife Refuge.About halfway down, the trail reaches the paved road to the campground. Hikers can follow this down to the campground parking area, or can veer left on a gated dirt track - this is the Steep Ravine Trail and will add about a quarter mile to your distance. From the campground area, head past the cabins for the final descent down to Steep Ravine Beach. This beautiful beach sees far fewer visitors than other nearby beaches owing to its hike-in access. Drinking water and vault toilets are located near the Steep Ravine rental cabins. Hikers can retrace their route back up to the trailhead when they're ready.
