Foster Point

Foster Point is a short and easy hike within the high-altitude getaway that is Laguna Mountain Recreation Area. The 1.4-mile trail traverses a gently sloping terrain, making it suitable for young children and those new to hiking. The trail begins at mile 25.7 on Sunrise Highway, directly across the road from the entrance to Horse Heaven Group Camp. The first quarter of a mile navigates through an area called Flathead Flats, a gently sloping hillside speckled with oaks and pines. The trail then merges with a section of the Pacific Crest Trail, where the landscape gradually changes from forested to chaparral. Veer right at the next intersection and follow the signs for the final stretch to Foster Point. At the top, hikers are rewarded with 360-degree views of a unique zone where the mountains meet the desert. There is a direction-finder, built by the Sierra Club, that signifies 17 surrounding mountain peaks. The view encompasses the Laguna Mountains, the Anza-Borrego desert, and the Sawtooth Mountains Wilderness below.
