Description
Mica Mountain (8,666') is the highest point in the Rincon Mountain Range, located in Saguaro National Park east of Tucson, Arizona. All the ways to Mica Mountain require a long distance trek, which makes this a popular area for backpacking. From the Italian Spring Trailhead, it's 19.1 miles round trip to the summit. The route follows the Italian Spring Trail, which is also part of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. As you climb, you'll get great views of the desert and valley below. Unfortunately, the view from the peak is not particularly noteworthy. There are no panoramic views from the flat summit, which is surrounded by ponderosa pine trees. Sign the trail register at the top, then retrace your steps back to where you started. As you descend, notice the changing vegetation from pine forest back down to oak woodland. There's definitely more to the journey than the destination with this peak bagging experience. The Italian Spring Trail is challenging, scenic, and can be used for running, hiking, and backpacking. COMMON VEGETATIONMesquite, oak, juniper, and pine trees.BEST TIME OF YEARThe trail is accessible year round, however, Spring is the best time of year with mild temperatures and the chance for wildflowers. ITALIAN SPRING TRAILHEADThe Italian Spring Trailhead is difficult to access as it is located off of an unmaintained gravel road, high clearance 4WD vehicles are recommended. The trailhead is not located in the national park therefore it does not require a permit or fee for parking. There are no restrooms and there is no water at the trailhead.
